Bud Breeding Oklahoma Spirit
Terry Wiens grew up in Drummond, Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma where he earned a degree in Business Administration. Terry attended law school at Oklahoma City University, graduated and was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association in 1972. Terry has practiced law for over 50 years, primarily in the area of probate and administrative law. He served as General Counsel for the National Reining Horse Association, the Palomino Horse Association and the Pinto Horse Association. He has also represented the OkQHA, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association, and the Appaloosa Horse Club. Terry was also appointed and served as a Commissioner for the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission. Jo Wiens grew up on a farm in Wakefield, Nebraska, and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she earned a B.S. in Business Administration. She moved to Oklahoma to attend law school at Oklahoma City University, graduated and was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association in 1990. Jo has practiced law for nearly 36 years, primarily in the area of health care and insurance litigation.
As members of OQHA, Terry served on the OQHA Board of Directors while Jo served on the Amateur Board. Terry & Jo worked on the OQHA annual live and silent auction for several years, raising thousands of dollars benefiting the OQHA Scholarship Fund. Terry and Jo’s love for horses started at an early age. As a youth, Terry would walk to his uncle’s farm in rural Garfield County, saddle a white horse named “Sugar”, ride him back to town and give rides to friends. As a young teenager, Jo begged for a horse, and finally got a bay quarter horse named “Pokey”. Jo often jokes she should have asked for a saddle too, as she only rode bareback, riding up and down the gravel backroads.
In the early 90’s, Terry and Jo bred and raised roping and performance horse prospects. Zan Parr Jet Smooth (Zan Parr Jack x Hamms Jet Smooth), a 1993 Bay Stallion, excelled in heading, heeling and calf roping. “Jet” won AQHA’s All-Around Performance Championship in 1998, AQHA’s highest award of a GMC pickup. In 2000, “Jet” also won AQHA’s Leading Contender, winning a trailer. The Wiens also bred their mare Shiney Walla Wanda (Shining Spark x Walla Walla Wanda) to Topsail Whiz, producing Walla Walla Whiz, a 2003 Chestnut Stallion. Whiz was sold as a long yearling to the Arcese family, who trained and showed him. Whiz won the NRHA Open Derby in 2007 and is now a $5 million dollar sire.
In 2008, Terry and Jo bought National Saddlery in Oklahoma’s Stockyards City. In 2022, National Saddlery moved into its new location, just across the street from Cattlemen’s Restaurant. National Saddlery is now the region’s largest saddle and tack store, supporting local and national shows, rodeos and equine events. Established in 1926, 2026 marks National Saddlery’s 100th year in business!
Terry and Jo Wiens live in rural Edmond, Oklahoma, where they enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren, their horses and mule.
