Gil Galyean
Gil Galyean of Purcell, Oklahoma, stands among the most influential horsemen in the modern Quarter Horse industry. A lifelong student of the horse, Galyean has spent more than three decades shaping champions, mentoring future professionals, and elevating the standards of Western Pleasure and all‑around horsemanship. His dedication, integrity, and unmatched “feel” in the saddle have earned him a place in the 2025 Oklahoma Quarter Horse Hall of Fame.
Raised in a family deeply rooted in the equine world, Galyean learned early from his parents his father, Kenneth, an AQHA judge and NCHA Hall of Fame inductee, and his mother, a respected trainer. Those formative years instilled in him a profound understanding of horses and a work ethic that would define his career. Galyean’s professional accomplishments are extensive. He is the 2018 AQHA Don Burt Professional Horseman of the Year and a longtime leader within AQHA, serving on the Animal Welfare Commission, Professional Horseman’s Committee, and Show Violations Hearing Committee. He is a past president of both the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association and the National Snaffle Bit Association, and continues to serve as an OQHA director‑at‑large.
As a trainer, Galyean has produced multiple AQHA World and Reserve World Champions, countless All American Quarter Horse Congress champions, and a long list of industry standouts. His program is built on softness, collection, longevity, and an unwavering commitment to letting each horse develop at its own pace. In 2015, he became NSBA’s first Million Dollar Rider, cementing his legacy among the sport’s elite. Alongside his wife, Becky, Galyean has built one of the most respected training operations in the country. Their meticulously designed facility, efficient daily program, and emphasis on turnout and horsemanship have become a model for others. Together, they have also shaped the next generation of trainers—many of whom now lead successful programs of their own.
Despite his achievements, Galyean remains grounded, forward‑thinking, and devoted to his clients, his horses, and his family. His influence reaches far beyond the show pen, touching the lives of riders, assistants, and horsemen who credit him with shaping their careers and their understanding of true horsemanship.
Gil Galyean’s induction into the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Hall of Fame honors not only a lifetime of excellence, but a legacy that
continues to elevate the industry he has served with passion, humility, and unmatched skill.
